The original ‘Dueran’ property dates back to very early times and originally covered a large area. Maps exist showing ‘Dueran’ as one of the few very large Pastoral holdings of Victoria around 1835.
Over time, sections of the holding were sold off and the farm now called ‘Dueran’ covers approx. 2,000 acres (817 ha) and is situated about 1okms north of Mansfield.
The double storey House on ‘Dueran’ was built in the 1930s by Bill Lester for his family and their household assistants. It has many features of an English Country House at the time: brick and timber, large rooms and a beautiful garden as surrounds.
The original front of the house boasts a huge balcony on both levels. It faces north and Mt Buller can clearly be seen to the East, from the garden. The house has been renovated and kept in excellent condition.
The garden was originally designed by the famous Edna Walling, but the grand plan was reduced out of necessity, due to scarcity of water.
Stones used as features in the garden have been collected from the property and laid carefully to enhance the garden’s appeal.
Not many functional grand houses and gardens still exist which are situated in the centre of a busy working sheep and cattle farm and afford views of the busy farm from several parts of the garden. Dueran House is a unique and historic venue. Contact us now to take advantage of this great place for your special event.
